  • Smashing TV: Link Unfurling Engines: Quality, Flavor And Brewing Techniques, Colin Bendell

Link unfurling engines in group chat platforms like WhatsApp and Slack, also called _microbrowsers_, render webpage links. Just like modern browsers, microbrowsers consume webpages, but unlike modern browsers, they do not run JavaScript and CSS nor support cookies to create a thumbnail or summary view of the page. The design and usability of webpage previews in private chats is the single most important influencer to attracting new customers, so they deserve more attention. Details

  • Smashing TV: Inspired By: Bea Feitler, Andrew Clarke

In this fifth instalment of Inspired Design Decisions, Andy Clarke will teach you about the pioneering female art director Bea Feitler. Feitler was the art director of Rolling Stone magazine and put a naked John Lennon on the cover in the 1970s. She was co-art director at Harper’s Bazaar and created the famous space helmet cover in 1965. But despite all her incredible work, Feitler has been described as “the pioneering female art Director you’ve never heard of.” Details

  • Smashing TV: Technical SEO For Single Page Apps, Martin Splitt

You will learn how to spot, debug, understand and fix technical issues you may encounter when looking at the SEO-side of your single page app. Details

That's What Members Say

Smashing Magazine has always been very supportive of the web community. Membership feels like a huge effort towards a strong, diverse community of people who care about their craft. Highly recommended for every web professional who wants to learn and connect — even those who don’t like cats.”

Here's How We Spent The Money

We believe in an open, diverse and accessible web. With your help, we want to reward people doing great work to make it happen. That’s why we actively support community events and projects, and people behind them. We want to keep things fully transparent, so here we’ll be reporting how we spend the money.

That’s what we’ve been doing in the past 90 days (August 16, 2019):

  • Released the first issue of our brand-new printed magazine Smashing Print on Ethics & Privacy and provided our dear Members and Smashers with a free digital copy,
  • Shipped Smashing Print #1 to our Smashers’ doorsteps — free of charge, of course,
  • Gathered for 13 new Smashing TV sessions since the end of May, including webinars on font loading performance, UX optimizations for assistive technology users, email coding guidelines, video editing, and a live discussion on ethics and privacy,
  • Ran a livestream on Ethics and Privacy,
  • Had all new webinars professionally transcribed and published,
  • Made usability refinements for the Membership dashboard and are experimenting with live stream sessions with members (to come later this year),
  • Supported Infoshare (Gdansk, Poland) and RSConf.by (a conference in Minsk, Belarus) with printed books and YGLF (Vilnius, Lithuania) and DWeb.Design meetup (Berlin, Germany) with books and swag as well,
  • Provided feedback on a bachelor thesis on Ethics & Privacy,
  • Gave away diversity tickets,
  • Ran Berlin Design Campus with Ukrainian students,
  • Released videos for SmashingConf San Francisco and SmashingConf Toronto 2019,
  • Published 83 articles in the magazine.

It’s all made possible with your contributions. You made it happen. So thank you.

Next steps:

  • Coach new voices in the industry to speak at a meet-up or a conference,
  • Set up local Smashing meet-ups around the world and support them with books and swag,
  • Support people who want to learn but can’t afford it with Smashing eBooks, webinars and learning material,
  • Support web-related non-profit events and meetups.

Your support allows us to bring you great content, pay all our contributors fairly, and reduce advertising on the site. Thank you.

Smashing Print 1: Ethics and Privacy
We also released the first issue of Smashing Print #1 on Ethics & Privacy. Available for free for Members and Smashers.

Still not interested?

No worries, that's perfectly fine! We kindly appreciate your time and interest. Perhaps you can support the Magazine in another way:

Thanks for getting so far, and hopefully see you in some part of the world soon! Boooo-yah!
